a baby blanket for odette

i’ve been flat out trying to finish this semester of university and get my degree completed, so the posts have been few and far between. in amongst the cold weather, the study and working, ross and i have become an aunty and uncle for the first time! little odette frances haden arrived in birmingham, uk on the 24th october. we haven’t been able to see her yet apart from a Skype session, but hopefully we’ll get to go over and meet her and celebrate stuart and danni’s (stu is ross’s twin) wedding next northern summer. in the meantime, i’ve been getting back into crochet and even embroidery like a maniac. stu and danni went for a yellow and grey theme for her room, so i thought i’d follow suit and create a blanket for her in similar colours. i always line my blankets with a cotton and usually add a layer of cotton batting in between to add some warmth. birmingham is cold to freezing for a good 9mths of the year so if anything, she’ll still need another layer! 🙂 adding cotton not only gives the extra warmth to the blanket, it adds a barrier between the crochet stitches and little hands and toes, which i think is more practical and comfy. plus, much easier to clean 🙂

this one is a granny stripe which follows the same principle of the classic granny square, but is worked in rows, not the round; i alternated the colours without too much structure so it didn’t start to resemble a beach towel, and i finished with three rows of dc stitch 9(similar to a weave) around the outside. of course i completely forgot i was adding satin binding to the edge (courtesy of my gran, as i still don’t have a sewing machine) so the detail was covered.

materials and other important numbers to crunch:

final size: 1m x 1.2m

total crochet/sewing time: approx 20-30hrs of crochet (three weeks total); sewing and binding: 3hrs (by my grandmother).

i used:

2 balls Heirloom merino magic 8ply (50g) in shade 228 (buttermilk yellow)

1/2 ball Panda magnum 8ply (100g) in white

1/2 ball Panda magnum 8ply (100g) in gun metal grey

4mts yellow satin binding

1mt x 1.2mt 100% organic cotton batting (available at spotlight)

1 mt x 1.2mt 100% cotton sheep fabric (available at spotlight)

i bought the merino wool from little sparrow in carlisle street, balaclava. they have fabulous supplies and handmade toys and accessories (including vintage bunting)!
